In the latest relocation initiative, over 500 Rohingya refugees from various camps in Cox’s Bazar are scheduled to move to Bhasan Char in the 24th phase. According to Mohammad Shamsud Douza Nayan, Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner, buses carrying the refugees are expected to depart from Ukhiya late Monday night towards Chattogram.
Nayan stated, “Rohingya refugees who have voluntarily opted to move to Bhasan Char started gathering at Ukhiya Degree College grounds after Monday evening. Registration activities are already underway, facilitated by the Refugee Commissioner’s Office and other relevant authorities.”
He added, “The number of Rohingya volunteers for this phase may range between 500 to 600. The buses will transport them from Ukhiya to Patenga in Chattogram by midnight on Monday.”
Upon arrival in Patenga on Tuesday morning, the refugees will be transported to Bhasan Char by ship.
In the previous 23rd phase, conducted on February 14, 1,527 Rohingya refugees were relocated to Bhasan Char. Prior to this, a total of 32,000 Rohingya were transferred across 22 phases.
The relocation of Rohingya to Bhasan Char began on December 4, 2020, and has continued in phases since then.
