Terror has pervaded the restive village tract of Kawa Bil on Wednesday after the army looks to further crack down on locals following visits by a high level UN delegation sent to investigate human rights violations.

Earlier security forces had warned local Muslims of dire consequences if they went to meet the UN investigation team.

The UN team went into the area at around noon, and left around 3pm. As soon as they left, the Rohingya Muslims started escaping fearing a renewed army crackdown. Shortly after, the army entered the western neighbourhood of Kawa Bil. Since 5 pm, the military have reportedly arrested some men hiding in the paddy fields. The details are not known at the moment.

Earlier, some men told the visiting UN team that nothing untoward had happened in the village. It cannot be confirmed who these men are. One source said they might be pro government collaborators, also known as Tabbe. However, some sections of the Rohingya media are saying they might also be from the Hindu community, as it is difficult to distinguish them from the Muslims, with both communities having South Asian features.

Two men were also arrested at around 2pm as they went to meet the UN delegation in Wabeik. However, some of the women shouted out loud and the Tatmadaw fearful the visiting team would notice the commotion released them. They have been identified as Hashu and Salim Ullah.

But local sources say at this moment terror has pervaded the village as the Rohingyas are hiding out of the village as army threatens punitive actions for meeting the UN team. Tatmadaw had earlier raped women in the village while the Hlun Htein had chased out around 2000 locals.

Meanwhile there are reports that the Tatmadaw has threatened Rohingyas in other village tracts including Bura Shida para and Nga Sa Gru where dozens of civilians have been killed in Tatmadaw firing in the first week of the crackdown, and many women raped afterwards.UN
