In the early hours of Thursday (January 12) Police arrested five traffickers as well as rescued 26 Rohingya men and women from the Maheshkhali coast of Teknaf. The Rohingyas were gathered to take them to Malaysia illegally.
The arrested are- Sabekun Nahar (23) of Maheshkhali Para of Teknaf, Nurul Islam (60) of the same area, Abdur Rahim (35) of Maherpara of Shahpari Dwip of Teknaf, Jahed Hossain (29) of the same area, and Jahed Hossain (20) of Kutupalong Rohingya Camp in Ukhia.
Abdul Halim, Officer in Charge of Teknaf police station said that smugglers were preparing to illegally smuggle a group of Rohingyas to Malaysia and Thailand by sea. On information police conducted raid and rescued 26 people including 17 men, 4 women, and 5 children from the resident of local Safiq. Besides, five brokers including a woman involved in trafficking were arrested. At that time, the trawler used by them was seized along with some cash.
It has been learnt that the arrested traffickers have been prosecuted and sent to prison under Human Trafficking Act and rescued victims were sent to relevant court.
