On Thursday, The United Nations envoy for Myanmar Noeleen Heyzer said, she sees no prospect for a “political settlement” in Myanmar.
At a press briefing Heyzer continued, “With both sides intent on prevailing by force, there is no prospect for a negotiated settlement.”
Myanmar has been mired in chaos and violence since the military rejected the November 2020 election results and overthrew the democratically elected civilian government through military coup on 1st February, 2021.
Since then, Rights groups say thousands of civilians, including many children, have been killed or arrested in the crackdown. The military has also arrested and sentenced Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint, and other high-ranking officials from the ousted National League for Democracy party.
“On 1st February, the military extended the state of emergency and intensified its use of force, including aerial bombing, the burning of civilian structures and other grave human rights violations, to maintain its grip on power,” she said.
Heyzer said violence is rising by the military junta, the opposition People’s Defense Force also known as the PDF, and ethnic armed groups.
