The authorities take immediate and decisive action

It is a matter of great concern that at least three Rohingya refugees were killed and seven others injured when a clash broke out at a camp. What is more concerning is that incidents of violence and unrest have only increased in frequency over the years, and this volatile environment at the camps could have ramifications that soon get out of control.
Bangladesh continues to go above and beyond in providing for the refugees while most of the world has not done their share in supporting these persecuted people who were compelled to flee a genocide in their own home land – none of this can be argued. With that said, from fires to murders to clashes and abductions, there continues to be a real challenge in ensuring a safer environment in these camps.
It is therefore imperative that we prioritize this issue, and the authorities take immediate and decisive action to ensure that this escalating crisis does not reach a point where it spills over beyond the borders of the camps.
The international community has long needed to step up and shoulder its responsibility in addressing this crisis. The fragility of the situation demands action, and while Bangladesh must do its part in fortifying the camps, it has earned the right to more assistance globally.
With over one million now at the camps in Cox’s Bazar, the strain on Bangladesh is not only unfair, but threatens to reach a breaking point, with the only viable, long-term solution being to have them safely be back in Rakhine State in Myanmar.
