Indiscriminate use of heavy weapons by Junta forces led to numerous civilian deaths and displacement as the conflict worsened around the city of Maungdaw.
A pregnant woman from Yungza Village (Kanyindaw) and Thare Ro Village was killed on Monday, as a result of the 5th Battalion of the Military Division of Maungdaw City’s constant use of heavy weaponry. Numerous villagers were hurt, and three men and four children perished. Witnesses who escaped the conflict claimed that around thirty homes had been demolished.
Altogether, the SAC used heavy weaponry to attack roughly eight Rakhine and Rohingya communities to the north and south of Maungdaw Township. Both fighter jets and artillery were used.
Meanwhile in Buthidaung, A woman from Rwa Ma village was seriously injured in an AA bomb at 11 a.m. on May 1, 2024. Nur Jahan, 55, daughter of Ali Juhar, suffered severe left chest and abdomen wounds. Hospitalised in Buthidaung, she is being treated for injuries. Eyewitnesses said shrapnel from three AA bombs hit Nur Jahan’s compound, injuring her and destroying her home. Several nearby homes partially collapsed during the attack.
Meanwhile, a man internally displaced because of Junta air strikes described his ordeal saying, “Today, the junta forces’ powerful weaponry destroyed an entire family,” he said on condition of anonymity. “Somewhere else, two Rohingya men and a child met their demise. They also set a man from Achaika village on fire. Over thirty residences were burned down. The army’s heavy weaponry was dumped by the Junta forces, and it was like rain was falling from the sky. There was nowhere the peasants could flee to. Everywhere they went, neighbouring communities were being supplied (bombed) with heavy weaponry.”
Additionally, residents stated that the Junta forces’ heavy weapon fire in Vaysali village resulted in the death of a woman and the burning of several homes.
