On Saturday the Rohingya prisoners staged a protest and hunger strike over the death of a Rohingya prisoner inside Cox’s Bazar district prison. A departmental case has been filed against a prison guard in this incident. Sources said that DIG (Prisons) Altaf Hossain has come to Cox’s Bazar from Chittagong to investigate the incident.
According to sources, the Rohingya prisoners alleged that a prisoner named Zafar Alam (23) died after being hit with stick by a prison guard on Friday afternoon (August 4). The Rohingyas detained in prison protested on Saturday. Other Rohingya prisoners alleged that the Rohingya prisoner died after being beaten by a guard named Shahadat Hossain. Following the murder, Rohingya prisoners refused to take lunch on Saturday demanding action against the guard.
M Shah Alam Khan, supervisor of Cox’s Bazar district prison, said on Sunday evening, “When two Rohingya prisoners got into a fight on Friday afternoon, the prison guards proceeded to deal with the situation.” At this time, Rohingya Zafar may have been slightly injured by the guard’s beating. He was taken to District Headquarters Hospital where he died.
However, due to the demands of Rohingyas, a departmental case has been filed against guard Shahadat on charges of beating.
The Rohingya prisoners calmed down after filing a departmental case against Shahadat. The supervisor also said that prisoner Zafar Alam was accused in a murder case.
Hearing the murder of Zafar inside District prison, the general refugees expressed fear by saying that the prison authority may overlook the matter presenting tactful excuses. Because the deceased is a Rohingya. So, the concerned authority should form a join investigation team with the involvement of UN to conduct a fair investigation, and make the accused accountable.
