January 30, 2025 – The Arakan Army (AA) has ordered the remaining Rohingya families in Palei Daung village, located in northern Buthidaung Township, to leave within a week without explanation. This order, given on January 29, comes after eight months of AA’s control over the area.
Many of these families had previously fled their homes in 2017 to escape the Myanmar military’s genocidal campaign. Now, after returning and attempting to rebuild their lives, they are once again facing forced displacement.
“All of them have taken refuge in different villages,” said a local source. “The 32 villages that survived massacres by the Arakan Army and junta forces were all located in the hilly areas of Buthidaung Township.”
Since taking control of Buthidaung, the AA has severely restricted Rohingya movement and access to essential services. Despite no recent armed clashes in the area, villagers are being forced to abandon their homes, land, and livestock.
“They have kept us under their control for the last eight months,” another villager shared. “Now they want us to leave, but we have nowhere to go.”
The displaced families now face an uncertain future, with no clear place of refuge as violence and oppression continue to escalate in Arakan.
