A Rohingya father died in Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital last Wednesday (April 12) morning. It is reported that since November of last year, a total of 4 members of his son’s family, including his son, went missing while crossing the sea to Malaysia. After thinking about them, he finally passed away.
The deceased is Mohammad Sultan (73), a refugee of Nayapara registered camp in Teknaf.
A near by refugee told Rohingya Khobor (RK) that Mohammed Sorfer, son of deceased Sultan was a teacher of camp base primary school in Nayapara camp. But the camp situation is becoming worse day by day. And there are no hopes to set up ones future in camp. At the same time, Sorfer was highly pensive of his children’s future. Ultimately he took decision to leave the camp by any means, and in November 2022, he along with his wife and children left the camp for Malaysia by boat. Unfortunately the boat which he boarded on went missing with around 180 passengers. Since then, Sultan became highly thoughtful of his son and son’s family members.
“Not only Sorfer but also many more refugee youths especially who are contemplative to their future became disappointed with refugee life of over three decades in congested refugee camps since 1992 with an uncertain future. In addition, the camp situation is being deteriorated day by day.” Mohammed, a registered refugee said, and blamed United Nation High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), including International Community for the situation.
“We are passing refugee life since 1992, with the hope of a durable solution according to UN refugee statute or mandate. Despite of our refugee life over three decades, our hopes remained hope. We became the victim of generation destroying through various forms in camp life,” another Refugee said.
“In this confusing situation of an uncertain future, what else can we do for a better life other than risking our lives and leaving the camp for elsewhere”, Mohammad added.
