Rohingya fishermen of Guaillar Dheil have been prohibited from going into sea, on their fishing boats or trawlers; As per requirement of a two-day ban, since 1st December, yet still in effect, due to being extended, indefinitely.
When confronted by the locals, the Let Wai Dad officials explained this expeditious restriction, as a precautionary measure taken by the authorities, in order to diminish the rate of human trafficking through sea.
However, the majority of Guillar Dheil’s inhabitants know fishing to be their only way of livelihood, and imposing such drastic measures against it, leaves the already poverty stricken minority in a state of complete darkness and helplessness.
