Maungdaw, October 17, 2025:
A 32-year-old Rohingya man named Muhammad Shofik, son of Jamu and a resident of Labbazar (Ajjapara) in Maungdaw Township, was arrested on October 15 after being falsely accused of links with the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), according to local residents.
Arrest During Morning Breakfast
Witnesses said Shofik was detained around 8 a.m. while having breakfast at a tea shop in Shwezar village. The arrest was reportedly carried out by the local village ruler, Harun, also known as Waggata Harun, with the help of a Rohingya faction aligned with the Arakan Army (AA).
Around 10 a.m., the same morning, Shofik was handed over to the AA and taken to their base in Buthidaung Township.
Locals Say the Accusation Is False
Community members described Shofik as an “ordinary civilian” who had returned from a refugee camp in Bangladesh about three months ago after seeking safety there in August 2025.
“He is innocent. We are trying to release him as soon as possible,” a villager told Rohingya Khobor.
Residents said that false accusations and arbitrary arrests have become increasingly common in AA-controlled areas of Arakan State. Several villagers reported similar detentions in recent weeks, often based on unverified claims of connections to armed groups or other alleged offences.
Fear Growing Among Rohingya Communities
Rights workers and community members said these arrests have deepened fear among Rohingya civilians who already face strict restrictions on movement, communication, and access to justice.
“Families of the detainees often have no information about their relatives’ whereabouts or well-being once they are taken away by the Arakan Army,” said Na Na, a Rohingya social activist.
Appeals for Justice and Accountability
The Arakan Army has not issued any statement regarding the arrest or the allegations made against Shofik. Community leaders are calling for his immediate and safe release and urging all parties to protect innocent civilians caught in the ongoing conflict.
“We are calling on all parties to protect innocent civilians amid the ongoing conflict in Rakhine State,” said a Rohingya human rights activist.
