A 32‑year‑old Rohingya man, identified as Mohammed Jokoria from Camp‑18, has reportedly been kidnapped by unidentified individuals while working outside the camp as a daily laborer. A few days after his disappearance, his family received a call from the kidnappers demanding a ransom of 10 lakh Taka for his release.
Incident Details
According to family members, Jokoria left Camp‑18 for his daily work routine but failed to return. The kidnappers later contacted his family, instructing them not to involve the authorities while insisting on the ransom payment.
His mother, visibly distraught, is quoted as saying:
“We are poor refugees. Where can we get such a huge amount of money? My son is our only hope.”
Rising Security Concerns
This incident has further heightened fears among Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar, particularly those who leave the camp for work due to limited job opportunities within the settlements. Local community leaders and camp authorities are aware of the situation, though details on the investigation and search efforts remain unclear.
The kidnapping adds to growing concerns about the security risks faced by Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, as many remain vulnerable when venturing outside the camps in pursuit of employment.
Ongoing Verification
While the report is based on information provided by local sources and family members, independent verification of all details is currently underway. Authorities are being urged to increase security measures and support efforts to locate Mohammed Jokoria.
