A Rohingya man sustained severe injuries after stepping on a landmine in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, Myanmar.
The victim has been identified as Mohammed Junaid (27), son of Nurul Hoque, a resident of Gunnah Hamlet in Shwe Zar village tract. The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 AM on February 5, when Junaid was on his way to wash his face near a water tank within his compound.
According to local reports, “Mohammed Junaid woke up in the morning and went to wash his face when the landmine suddenly exploded, leaving him critically injured.” The explosion resulted in the complete severance of one of his legs, along with multiple other injuries. He is currently undergoing emergency medical treatment, and his condition remains critical.
This is not the first such incident in the area. On January 29, another Rohingya man, Khurshid Alom, son of Mohammed Esope, was injured after stepping on a landmine while descending from his house into the compound. He also lost his right leg in the explosion.
A local Rohingya man told Rohingya Khobor, “Since December 8, 2024, the Myanmar military junta has withdrawn, and Maungdaw is now under the full control of the Arakan Army (AA). The AA has planted numerous landmines across Maungdaw, particularly in Rohingya residential areas. Their intention is to harm Rohingya civilians while shifting blame onto others for these explosions.”
He added, “Living in our own homes should bring safety, not fear. But now, every step we take could be our last.”
Many Rohingya families who have returned to their homes now live in constant fear of landmines, as the threat persists even within their own compounds.
