Pauktaw Township, Rakhine State-On the evening of December 8, 2024, a 40-year-old Rohingya security staff member of Médecins Sans Frontières-Holland (MSF-H) was tragically killed while on duty at the organization’s clinic in Sin Tet Maw Rakhine Village. The incident occurred around 6 PM when a Rakhine staff member attacked the victim from behind with a wooden stick.
The deceased, who reportedly had no disputes with colleagues, was targeted amid escalating tensions. Local sources indicate that some Rakhine individuals oppose the employment of Rohingya by international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) in Pauktaw Township.
This incident follows the killing of a Rohingya elder by Rakhine individuals last week. Pauktaw Township has been under the control of the Arakan Army since November 2023, and the situation for Rohingya internally displaced persons (IDPs) has become increasingly dire.
Daily restrictions on movement, job scarcity, and insufficient humanitarian aid have forced many Rohingya IDPs to flee the area. Meanwhile, schools and markets across the township remain closed, worsening the humanitarian crisis.
This latest act of violence highlights the growing dangers faced by the Rohingya community in Pauktaw and underscores the urgent need for intervention and protection.
