Bangladeshi meteorologists warn that Cyclone Yaas will likely make landfall on May 26 and would affect the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra and also a warning signal number 2 is declared. However, heavy winds have started to blow in the Rohingya refugee camps and refugees from various camps today expressed their anxiety about whether their weak shades can withstand the effect of the cyclone.
Abdul Karim a refugee from camp 26 told Rohingya Khobor, “We are in a terrifying situation over the upcoming cyclone ‘Yaas’ as our shades are made of bamboos and plastic which might be blown away during cyclone”.
“Currently, the wind is blowing at a higher speed than other times and our shades are shaking”, he added.
The refugees are also worried if there is any contingency plan and urged the various United Nations agencies and INGOs to look into the matter.
