Systematic extortion following systematic blockade adds to Rohingya woes

Amidst a state of blockade preventing them from earning a livelihood, the few remaining Rohingyas left in  Maungdaw are now facing systematic extortion.

According to multiple sources, notorious collaborator and chairman of the village tractof Ferang Fru Rahamat Ullah has ordered at least ten households to pay him a million kyats each. The households are charged with the crime of not supporting Rahamat, a pro military collaborator during the last election.

The families will be forced to leave for Bangladesh if they are unable to pay the money, threatened Rahamat who enjoys the full backing of security forces. However the households will be totally bankrupt even if they somehow manage the hefty sum of money.

Rohingya activists and international organisations have alleged the government has imposed a systematic state of blockade on the few remaining Rohingyas depriving them of food and leaving them with little choice but to make the long and risky journey to the safety of Bangladesh. Local sources allege that in some areas, the government has now restored to systematic extortion to make the Rohingyas leave.
