Earlier this month, two Rohingya refugees in India filed a Public Interest Litigation in Delhi High Court against Facebook. The petitioners asked for protection of their right to life, as they have been facing physical threats and other dangers due to hateful and inflammatory remarks on Facebook.
Today, January 31, the High Court ruled against the Petitioners stating that the Information Technology Act provides a procedure for grievances to be addressed and further, the petitioners have not shown that Facebook has not followed the obligations under the IT Rules.
Before today’s judgment, the Court asked Facebook to monitor and remove hate speech and harmful content. The negative posts in question about the Rohingya were already removed.
