Although there has been no progress on the issue of Rohingya repatriation between Bangladesh and Myanmar, preparations have not stopped. The construction of three more transit centers for the repatriation of Rohingyas has started at Tumbru, Ghumdhum, and Teknaf of Naikkongchari Upazila of Bandarban.
These centers are being constructed under the supervision of the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission under the Ministry of Relief and Rehabilitation. The matter was confirmed by Mizanur Rahman, the Commissioner of Refugee Relief and Repatriation.
He said that the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief has given money to the Department of Disaster Management for the construction of the transit center. They hired contractors by trending. And Bandarban district administration has given space.
Mizanur Rahman also said that the new transit centers are being constructed at Tumbru in Bandarban, Ghumdhum and Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar. Earlier there were two transit camps, one at Keruntali in Teknaf and another in the sleepy part of Bandarban opposite the Ukhiya TV Tower. Also, a tender has been given for the repair of Teknaf Keruntali jetty, this jetty will also be repaired.
Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner. Mizanur Rahman said that transit centers are being built mainly for repatriation. Rohingyas willing to repatriate voluntarily will be brought first and placed in transit centers. They may stay at these centers for one or two nights. Each transit center can accommodate 500 Rohingyas at once.
