Maungdaw Township– On Tuesday, at around 10:00 a.m., a 15-year-old Rohingya boy named Noor Mustafa had his leg amputated below the knee after stepping on a landmine near Nyaung Chaung village. The landmine, reportedly planted by the Military Council, exploded while Mustafa was herding cows in a nearby field.
The incident highlights the ongoing dangers posed by landmines and unexploded remnants of war in Rakhine State. Frequent landmine explosions have resulted in numerous casualties, including deaths and severe injuries, leaving residents in a state of constant worry.
In response to this latest incident, social relief groups have issued warnings to residents, advising them to exercise extreme caution in areas near former military council troop stations due to the presence of landmines.
Currently, efforts are underway to transfer Noor Mustafa to Bangladesh for necessary medical treatment. The community and various organisations are rallying to support the young victims and raise awareness about the persistent threat of landmines in the region.
Landmines have also been planted in Rohingya villages by the AA in lesser numbers, one of which resulted in the death of a child last month.
