A 26-year-old Rohingya woman died by suicide early Monday at the Madhurchhara No. 4 Rohingya Camp in Ukhiya Upazila, Cox’s Bazar, following a reported family dispute.
The deceased has been identified as Nur Kalima, wife of Md. Soloman, a resident of Block D-06 within the camp. According to local residents, Nur Kalima allegedly consumed poison around 2:00 AM after an argument broke out within the family.
Hearing her cries for help, neighbors rushed to the scene, broke open the door, and found her unconscious. She was initially taken to Gonoshasthaya Kendra (People’s Health Center) inside the camp for emergency treatment. As her condition deteriorated, she was transferred to the Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.
“It all happened so suddenly. We heard noises and rushed to help, but by the time we got her to the hospital, it was too late,” said Mohammad Ismail, a neighbor from Block D-06.
Confirming the incident, Sub-Inspector Suman De of Ukhiya Police Station stated that the police recovered the body and sent it to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital for an autopsy. Further investigation into the circumstances of her death is underway.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief across the camp community, with neighbors expressing sorrow over the rising pressures and mental health challenges faced by displaced Rohingya families living under difficult conditions.
