A shepherd boy was brutally assaulted by police in Mun Gala, Northern Maungdaw on Friday.
Md Shahid Ullah was herding his cows in a field outside the village when a police official came and told me to come to a nearby camp along with his animals. When Shahid Ullah went there, the police told him that the fields were the property of people of Myanmar. As Rohingyas were not nationals of Myanmar, but illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, they had no right to graze their cattle there. As a punishment Shahid was ordered to hand over a very large amount of money, which the boy did not have on him.
As he failed to pay the fine, Shahid was brutally assaulted, till a point where he almost lost consciousness. The boy was later returned to his village, but had been without medical treatment since then. All medical facilities in Rohingya settlements are currently closed.
