Camp 14 in the Rohingya Refugee Camp became the center of a dramatic incident yesterday as community members united to catch a suspected kidnapper. The arrest took place around 4:00 PM, with the suspect being handed over to the Armed Police Battalion (APBN) shortly afterward.
This act of vigilance comes amid growing fears about kidnappings targeting children and young men in the camps. Organized groups are exploiting the vulnerable living conditions of Rohingya refugees, leaving families terrified and mistrustful of their surroundings.
A resident of Camp 14 expressed relief after the incident: “Alhamdulillah, we caught the suspect and handed him over to the authorities. We are grateful to the Bangladesh government and APBN for their quick action.”
In recent months, kidnappings have become alarmingly frequent in the camps, with children and young men often being the primary targets. These cases frequently involve demands for ransom or, worse, force victims into labor. Families live in constant fear, worrying for the safety of their loved ones.
Local elders have called for the community to remain vigilant, recognizing their role in fighting such crimes. “We cannot allow criminals to thrive here. It is up to all of us to protect our neighbors and children,” said one elder from Camp 14.
The Bangladesh government has ramped up security efforts in the camps, deploying more APBN forces to deter criminal activities. The recent arrest is seen as a testament to the growing collaboration between Rohingya community members and law enforcement in ensuring safety.
An APBN officer confirmed the arrest, stating: “The suspect is in custody, and our investigation will uncover the extent of their activities and any groups they may be connected to.”
