The military junta is considering talks with Myanmar’s ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to end the crisis caused by the coup. The country’s military chief gave this information on Friday.
General Min Aung Hlaing said in a statement that the process of negotiation with Suu Kyi may begin after the end of her trial in court.
In February 2021, Myanmar’s military overthrew the government of Aung San Suu Kyi. She was recently sentenced to 17 years in prison in several cases. Rights groups claim that the cases are politically motivated and that the court imposed the sentence under the influence of the government.
Several cases against Suu Kyi are still ongoing. A journalist is allowed to enter the court during the hearing of the case. Even Suu Kyi’s lawyers are prohibited from speaking with reporters.
