Empowering the Future Through Education

In the heart of the Rohingya refugee camps, where opportunities are scarce and hope is often fragile, education remains a beacon of resilience. Among those striving to make a difference is Mr. Sayidul Islam, an educator and visionary leader. Originally from Ngan Chaung village, Maungdaw Township, Arakan, he grew up witnessing the systematic discrimination faced by Rohingya students under Myanmar’s oppressive regime. Despite the barriers, he pursued his education and later dedicated himself to teaching at his village’s high school.

In 2017, when genocide and mass violence forced him and his family to flee to Bangladesh, he endured the hardships of displacement in the overcrowded refugee camps of Cox’s Bazar. While adjusting to this new reality, he recognized the growing educational crisis among Rohingya children, many of whom were being pushed into child labor, early marriage, and other harmful activities due to the lack of schooling opportunities. Determined to address this issue, he joined hands with his two brothers—both experienced teachers—to establish a school that would reignite hope and learning within the community.

A New Beginning: The Birth of Sanctum Knowledge Private School

While working at the Turkish Field Hospital inside the refugee camp, Mr. Sayidul observed a disturbing trend—a lack of educational opportunities was forcing Rohingya children into child labor, child marriage, gambling, and life on the streets. Concerned about their future, he discussed the issue with his two brothers, both experienced teachers, and together, they decided to open a private school in the Balukhali Camp-9 area.

In 2023, with strong community support, Sanctum Knowledge Private School was founded. Initially, it began with only 42 students, but as parents and community members recognized the dedication of the teachers and the quality of education, more children began enrolling.

Today, the school educates 277 students, including 168 boys and 109 girls, through 10 learning facilities with the support of 12 dedicated community teachers.

Challenges Faced by the School

Starting and running a community-based school without financial support has been an uphill battle. Some of the key challenges include:

✅ Lack of essential supplies – Books, whiteboards, markers, and other classroom materials are scarce.

✅ Low student attendance – Some students struggle to attend regularly due to their families’ financial difficulties.

✅ Teacher delays – Teachers are volunteers, making it difficult to ensure a consistent schedule.

✅ No external funding – The school relies entirely on student contributions, often insufficient to cover basic needs.

A Call for Support

Despite these challenges, Mr. Sayidul remains committed to educating Rohingya children and giving them hope for a brighter future. He proudly emphasizes, “We do not need salaries; we need to change our community for a better future, with peace and dignity.”

However, the school urgently needs financial assistance to expand and accommodate more students. Many parents cannot afford education costs, making it difficult for their children to enroll.

Conclusion

Sanctum Knowledge Private School is more than just an educational institution; it is a symbol of hope, resilience, and the pursuit of a better future for the Rohingya community. With proper support, it can continue to shape young minds and transform the future.
