A three and a half year old Rohingya boy was killed in a road accident in Camp 8W on February 9, 2026, after being hit by a truck near the I 18 football field, local residents said. The incident occurred at around 10:00 am.
According to residents, the truck was carrying sand for the construction of clay shelters under a project supported by the International Organization for Migration. The vehicle struck the child, who lived in Camp 8W, Main Block C, Sub Block H 29. The child died on the spot due to the severity of the impact.
The victim’s father was identified as Monjur Alom. Family members said the sudden death of the child has left them in deep shock and grief.
Eyewitnesses said that following the accident, the truck driver fled the scene with the vehicle. Residents said no immediate action was taken at the site after the incident.
Calls for Accountability and Safety Measures
The incident has caused fear and sadness among Rohingya residents in the camp. Community members are calling for an urgent investigation into the accident and accountability for those responsible.
Residents also demanded stronger safety measures inside the camps, particularly in busy areas near playgrounds, roads, and construction sites where heavy vehicles operate.
Local people said such incidents could be prevented if proper road safety rules, monitoring, and controls on vehicle movement were enforced to protect children and other camp residents.
