A Rohingya woman has become a victim of human trafficking and brutal abuse in Indonesia after being deceived by traffickers who promised safety and assistance, according to community members in Pekanbaru. Instead of help, she was subjected to severe physical violence and sexual assault before being abandoned on a roadside.
The victim, identified as Haresa Bibi, was later found by local residents and taken to a Rohingya tarpaulin camp in Pekanbaru. Camp residents said she is now suffering from serious psychological trauma and remains in deep mental and emotional distress following the abuse.
“She arrived in a broken condition,” said a Rohingya man living in the camp. “She was frightened, silent, and unable to speak properly. What happened to her has shaken all of us.”
Another Rohingya woman said the case reflects the dangers many refugees face while fleeing persecution and seeking safety. “No one should experience what she went through,” she said. “We pray her family can be found and that justice will be done.”
According to information shared by community members, the victim’s details are as follows:
Name: Haresa Bibi
Father’s name: Araf Ali
Mother’s name: Shomjida
Local authorities and humanitarian volunteers have been informed, and efforts are underway to trace her relatives and ensure further protection. Community members are urging people to share the information widely to help locate her family and identify those responsible for the abuse.
Human trafficking remains a serious threat to Rohingya refugees across the region, as displacement, lack of legal protection, and limited safe migration options leave many vulnerable to exploitation. Rohingya residents in Pekanbaru are calling for stronger action against trafficking networks and improved protection mechanisms for refugees.
Haresa Bibi is currently receiving temporary support at the camp. Those assisting her are appealing for additional humanitarian assistance, including medical care, psychosocial support, and legal intervention, as investigations continue.
