Cox’s Bazar Rohingya Camp — May 18, 2025
A heavy-loaded truck accident occurred around 4:00 p.m. on the narrow road between Camp 8W and Camp 10, leaving a Rohingya woman and her child injured, according to local witnesses. The incident has reignited concerns about road safety and traffic control inside the congested refugee camps.
Eyewitnesses said the truck, carrying goods, lost control and swerved near a crowded footpath, striking Kawsara Begum and her young child as they walked nearby. Nearby residents rushed to help and quickly transported the injured pair to the MSF-run hospital for emergency treatment.
Fortunately, both mother and child are reported to have suffered only minor injuries and are currently in stable condition.
“This could have been much worse. The roads are too narrow for these large trucks, and there are always children walking nearby,” said one Camp 10 resident.
Community members have long voiced concern over the frequent movement of large, often overloaded vehicles on camp roads, which are not built for heavy traffic. Such trucks often carry supplies for NGOs or local markets but pose a significant risk to pedestrians, especially in densely populated zones.
“We need stricter control over how and when these trucks move,” said a volunteer from Camp 8W.
“The safety of our children and elders must come first.”
Residents are urging the Camp-in-Charge (CiC) authorities, humanitarian agencies, and logistics operators to immediately implement better traffic coordination, speed limits, and pedestrian safety protocols to prevent future incidents.
