According to a villager from Northern Rakhine state, today in the afternoon, 16 staffs of the “Union Enterprise for Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement and Development” (UEHRD) were detained by Arakan Army (AA). The captured individuals were travelling from Sittwe(Akyab) to Buthidaung township via “Aung Than Gwan Express”.

UEHRD is chaired by State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and Dr Win Myat Aye the Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement act as Vice Chairman.

According to the UEHRD website, they are a public-private Union enterprise with three main goals: providing humanitarian assistance, carrying out resettlement and rehabilitation and working for development in Rakhine State.

The UEHRD on 11 December 2019, has said the following on the ICJ:

” We, the Union Enterprise for Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement and Development in Rakhine (UEHRD), categorically deny the allegations made at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague regarding the confiscation of land. Such an action has never been taken by UEHRD. The land used for constructing the reception and transit centers were provided by the Rakhine State Government. “
