UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday (12 November) called on Myanmar’s military junta to “immediately” return to democratic processes, saying it was the only way to end the “endless nightmare” besetting the country.
“I call on the Myanmar authorities to listen to their people, release political prisoners and quickly return to democracy,” Guterres said, This is the only way to stability and peace.
He told reporters at the summit of Southeast Asian leaders in Phnom Penh.
ASEAN and the European Union are putting a lot of pressure on the country’s junta government to stop the tolerance that is going on throughout Myanmar. But nothing is working. No suggestions or calls are taken into account by the Myanmar military government. The country’s situation is getting worse.
The Myanmar issue dominated the ASEAN summit due to the growing crisis, diplomatic efforts to avoid the country’s bloodshed have so far failed.
The UN Secretary General said that the situation in Myanmar is a nightmare for the people and a serious threat to the peace and security of the entire region.
