In a distressing turn of events, Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh’s Kutupalong refugee camp are facing a new wave of terror as unidentified gangs have begun systematically robbing them of their meager belongings. The nightly raids, carried out by masked individuals armed with weapons, have left the community in a state of fear and uncertainty.
According to reports from within the camp, the gangs are targeting the most vulnerable families, often breaking into their makeshift homes in the dead of night. If valuables are not found, the attackers are taking basic necessities like rice, with each family losing 2 to 3 kilograms of their food supplies. The situation has reached a point where many residents are left with nothing but fear and despair.
“We thought our suffering would end once we escaped the horrors of Myanmar, but now we are being oppressed by our own people,” said an elderly Rohingya man, his voice filled with sorrow. “We fled genocide, only to face this new form of terror in what should be a place of refuge.”
The most troubling aspect of these attacks is that they are reportedly being carried out by members of the Rohingya community itself. “It’s heartbreaking to see our own people causing so much pain,” said another resident. “When will this community change? We are already suffering so much, and now we have to live in fear of our neighbors.”
The gangs, who cover their faces to avoid identification, are said to lock the doors of each home they enter, robbing one after another. The frequency and boldness of these attacks have only increased in recent days, creating an atmosphere of constant fear within the camp.
Despite the best efforts of the community to protect themselves, the situation remains dire. The refugees, who have already endured so much at the hands of the Myanmar military and the Mogh forces, now find themselves at the mercy of their own people. The daily reality of life in Kutupalong has become one of oppression and suffering, with no end in sight.
