On Wednesday (16 November) the Public Prosecutor (PP) Faridul Alam said that Judge Mohammad Ismail of Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Judge Court sentenced four people, including one Rohingya, to death today for smuggling 1.3 million Yaba in Cox’s Bazar.
The convicts are – Mohammad Ayaz (34) son of Bashir Ahmad, resident of Balukhali Rohingya camp-13, of Ukhia, Mohammad Billa (37) son of Maqbul Ahmed of Power House Dakshin Hajipara, Jhelongja Union of Cox’s Bazar Sadar Upazila, Md. Azimullah (43) and Abul Kalam (37), son of Faizul Haque of the same area.
Faridul Alam said that the Judge also fined each of the convicts in this case filed in 2021 by Tk 50,000. Ayaz and Billa were present in the court when the verdict was pronounced.
Faridul also said that on the night of August 23, 2020, a team of RAB-15 raided a fishing trawler in the Bakkhali river adjacent to the Khurushkul Bridge at Majhir Ghat in Cox’s Bazar. At that time, Ayaz and Billa were arrested. On sensing the presence of RAB, another 4/5 escaped. After searching the trawler, 1.3 lakh yaba and 10 thousand cash were recovered.
Harunur Rashid an officer of RAB-15 filed a case with Cox’sBazar Model Police Station under Narcotics Act naming two persons as accused and 4/5 in unknown identity. Naming accused Ayaz and Billa also gave statement in the court
After the investigation of the case, RAB-15 SI Mohammad Sohel Sikdar submitted the charge sheet to the court on June 10, 2021, and the trial of the case began.
