The Bangladesh Coast Guard rescued 153 people, including women and children, during a late night operation in the deep sea near Saint Martin’s Island and arrested at least 15 suspected human traffickers, officials confirmed on Sunday. The report was first published by The Times of Bangladesh.
The operation began around 3:00 a.m. after the Coast Guard received information that a large group of people was being held in boats in deep waters, reportedly waiting to be smuggled to Malaysia.
A Coast Guard vessel named Kamruzzaman was deployed to the area. According to officials, when officers signaled a suspicious boat to stop, it attempted to flee. After a brief chase, the Coast Guard intercepted the boat in waters near the island.
During the search, officers found 153 people on board. The group included women and children. Fifteen individuals suspected of involvement in human trafficking were arrested at the scene.
Lieutenant Commander Sabbir Alam Sujon, a Coast Guard media officer, said the rescued individuals included both Bangladeshi citizens and Rohingya from Teknaf and other districts. Initial questioning indicated that they had been promised good jobs, a better life, and low cost travel to Malaysia.
Officials believe that organized trafficking networks were behind the attempt.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against the arrested suspects. Authorities said the rescued individuals are receiving necessary assistance, and arrangements are being made to ensure their safety.
