Teknaf – Tatmadaw Yay and Hlun Htein intercepted a boat carrying medical refugees back from Bangladesh.
The group consisting of 26 men and two women were returning to Arakan on Monday when they were intercepted on the Naaf river by the security forces. The group had embarked on the boat from Shahpuri Dweep in Teknaf when they were chased by the Navy and Hlun Htein in their speedboats.
They had crossed over to Bangladesh earlier last month for medical treatment.
The patients hailed from the southern townships of Akyab, Pauktaw, Minbyn and Kyauktaw. Their current fate remains unknown but sources have said they are currently being held in Maungdaw town.
Rohingya patients are not welcome in the hospitals of Arakan. Many, including pregnant women have been killed by medical staff after being admitted for treatment. The situation is more common in townships with a Buddhist majority. Under such circumstances, many Rohingyas in desperate need of medical care cross in to Bangladesh.
