Maungdaw, October 30, 2025 — Members of the Arakan Army (AA) have unlawfully arrested two Rohingya youths in Tharay Oak Village, located in the northern part of Maungdaw Township, Rakhine State, according to local sources.
The victims were identified as 30-year-old Mohammed Roshid and 22-year-old Hala Futu, also known as Shofi Alom. Witnesses said the two men were detained by AA soldiers on October 28 while they were on their way to work.
Local residents reported that Mohammed Roshid suffers from a mental health condition, and his family is deeply concerned about his safety. The arrests have sparked outrage in the community, with villagers describing the incident as a violation of basic human rights and the absence of rule of law under AA’s control in northern Maungdaw.
“It’s very sad that even a person with mental illness was arrested,” a resident told Rohingya Khobor. “This is a serious human rights violation, and the AA should take action immediately.”
Family members and villagers have urged the AA to investigate the incident and ensure the immediate and safe release of both men.
Locals said such arrests have heightened fear and insecurity among Rohingya civilians, who already face movement restrictions and harassment in the region. Human rights groups have called on AA/ULA leaders to protect Rohingya residents and ensure that all civilians are allowed to live safely and peacefully in their villages.
