Myanmar Military’s Airstrike on Rohingya Village Leaves 41 Dead, Dozens Injured

Ramree Township, Rakhine State — January 8, 2025

In a devastating escalation of violence, the Myanmar military launched airstrikes on Kyauk Ni Maw village in Ramree Township, Rakhine State, leaving 41 civilians dead and 52 others critically injured. The attack targeted the predominantly Rohingya Muslim fishing community, destroying nearly 600 homes and displacing hundreds of families.

Survivors recounted scenes of chaos and horror as the strikes flattened homes without warning. “We had no warning. Suddenly, the entire village was engulfed in flames,” said one resident, whose family narrowly escaped the destruction. The displaced families now face an uncertain future, lacking shelter and basic necessities.

Targeting Civilians

While the Arakan Army (AA) claimed the area was under its control, AA spokespersons confirmed that no clashes were occurring at the time of the airstrike. This has raised serious concerns about the Myanmar military’s deliberate targeting of civilians. Human rights advocates have condemned the attack as a blatant act of ethnic violence, pointing to the ongoing persecution of the Rohingya people.

“The targeting of Rohingya villages amid a lack of active conflict underscores the Myanmar military’s intent to intimidate and eliminate this community,” stated a regional human rights advocate.

A History of Persecution

This airstrike is the latest in a series of violent acts against the Rohingya, a community that has faced decades of systemic discrimination, violence, and forced displacement. Since the military coup in February 2021, the junta has intensified its operations across Myanmar, with Rakhine State remaining a focal point of violence and ethnic tensions.

International organizations, including the United Nations, have repeatedly called for accountability, but justice for the Rohingya has remained elusive. Activists and human rights groups are now urging an independent investigation into the airstrike, demanding accountability for what they describe as war crimes.

Dire Humanitarian Situation

The survivors of Kyauk Ni Maw village are in urgent need of assistance. Aid organizations are mobilizing support, but the scale of devastation has left many struggling to secure food, water, and shelter. “We have lost everything—our homes, our loved ones,” lamented one elderly resident. “We need help, and we need justice.”

International Urgency

This attack serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing plight of the Rohingya people. As the global community watches, there is an urgent need for increased international pressure to end the violence and provide protection for vulnerable populations in conflict-ridden Myanmar.

The tragedy of Kyauk Ni Maw underscores the critical need for decisive action to prevent further atrocities and to ensure justice for the Rohingya. The world cannot afford to look away.
