The Arakan Army held a meeting with Rohingya community leaders in Young Chaung village in Buthidaung Township on 1 March, where young girls and boys were reportedly urged to become involved with the armed group, according to local sources.
Residents said members of the Arakan Army gathered village elders and community leaders to discuss the role of Rohingya youth in the area. During the meeting, one commander reportedly stated that “Bangali needs to protect Arakan country,” referring to the Rohingya community.
The remark has caused concern among villagers.
“We are worried about our children. We want them to be safe and continue their education, not join fighting,” said a Rohingya elder from Young Chaung.
Another community member said, “Many families are afraid. We do not want more problems in our village.”
A young resident added, “We want peace. We do not want to be forced into anything.”
At the time of reporting, no official public statement had been released by the Arakan Army regarding the meeting. Villagers said they are closely monitoring the situation and hope that no pressure will be placed on their children.
