In the Ukhiya Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar on Wednesday morning, an avalanche killed eight Rohingya and one Bangladeshi.
Md. Tanvir Hossain, the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), told the Dhaka Tribune that the floods occurred around 5 a.m. and that rescue and recovery efforts were still ongoing.
According to Ukhiya 8 APBn Chief Additional DIG Md. Amir Jafar, it has been raining nonstop in the Ukhiya and Teknaf areas since Tuesday. “Early this morning, landslides hit several camps in the Balukhali area of the Palongkhali union.” The land’s slopes concealed many Rohingya homes.
He said that as soon as they heard the news, the fire department, the Red Crescent, the Armed Police Battalion, and volunteer teams started working to save people.
A police officer said that four people had died in camp No. 10, and two had died in each of camps Nos. 9 and 8. A landslide in the hilly area next to Camp No. 14 also claimed the life of a school student.
Md. Shamsud Douza, who oversees additional refugee relief and repatriation, stated that they have not yet confirmed the names of the deceased.
