Bangladesh has said it can no longer shoulder the responsibility of hosting more than one point three million Rohingya refugees and has urged the international community to take urgent and effective steps for their safe return to Myanmar. The appeal came after the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly approved a new resolution on Rohingya Muslims.
According to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the resolution was adopted by consensus and calls for renewed global efforts to ensure a durable solution for the Rohingya crisis. The text stresses the need for a safe, voluntary and sustainable return to Myanmar. It also highlights concerns over ongoing human rights violations in Rakhine State.
UN Resolution Gains Broad Support
The resolution was jointly tabled by the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the European Union, with support from one hundred five countries. It reflects international concern over the continued targeting of Rohingya communities, restrictions on humanitarian access and the arrival of new refugees in Bangladesh and neighbouring states.
The UN refugee agency also announced that Italy has contributed two point five million euros to support essential services for Rohingya refugees.
No Progress on Repatriation
Bangladesh said the resolution has been adopted every year since 2017, yet meaningful progress on repatriation has not been achieved. Officials expressed frustration that eight years have passed without a single large scale return to Myanmar despite repeated commitments.
After the vote on nineteen November, Bangladesh thanked all member states for their support but said the overall situation remains unchanged. Diplomats described the lack of progress as deeply disappointing and urged the international community to remain engaged until Rohingyas are able to return home in safety and dignity.
