The Bangladesh Navy has arrested 23 people and seized 1,750 bags of cement during an operation against alleged sea smuggling near Kutub Dia, officials said.
The arrests were made on December 17 after naval intelligence indicated that cement was being secretly transported by engine boats toward Arakan State. Following the tip off, Bangladesh Navy patrols were deployed in waters near Saint Martin’s Island.
While patrolling about 46 miles from the Kutub Dia lighthouse, navy personnel detected two wooden boats moving in a suspicious manner. When ordered to stop, the boats attempted to flee in the direction of Arakan State, according to naval sources.
A navy official said the attempt to escape raised further suspicion. After a brief pursuit, the patrol ship Mohibullah intercepted the vessels, later identified as FB Azizul Haque and FB Runa Akhtar.
A search of the boats led to the seizure of 1,750 bags of cement and 32 mobile phones. All 23 people on board were taken into custody.
Local fishermen said such movements are frequently observed at sea, especially at night. One fisherman said boats often pass quietly without lights, making it difficult to identify their purpose.
The seized cement and the arrested individuals were handed over to Patenga Model Police Station for legal proceedings, according to local media reports.
Bangladesh Navy officials said coastal patrols will continue to prevent illegal trade and smuggling through maritime routes. They said the navy remains committed to maintaining security in the country’s coastal waters.
