Police have recovered the body of an elderly Rohingya woman, estimated to be around 90 years old, from an empty field beside the Marine Drive in Baharchhara, Noakhali West Para, Teknaf. The discovery was made late Monday night, around 11:30 PM, but the identity of the woman remains unknown.
Local authorities believe the woman fell victim to human traffickers who had smuggled a group of Rohingya people into Bangladesh from Myanmar in exchange for money. According to initial investigations, the traffickers looted the valuables, including gold and cash, carried by the Rohingya group. In the process, the elderly woman died. The traffickers then buried her body before fleeing the scene.
Confirming the incident, Teknaf Model Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Gias Uddin stated, “We recovered the body of an elderly Rohingya woman from underground near Marine Drive. Preliminary evidence suggests that human traffickers were involved in burying the body. We have identified several individuals linked to the trafficking network and are thoroughly investigating the matter.”
The police are currently preparing to send the body to Cox’s Bazar for an autopsy.
Abdur Gafur, a local Union Parishad member, shared that human traffickers frequently transport Rohingya refugees across the border. He added, “Last Friday, I heard that a group of Rohingya refugees was brought in by boat from Myanmar. During the journey, this elderly woman passed away. The traffickers looted gold and cash from the refugees during the incident.”
Police investigations are ongoing to identify and capture those responsible for this tragic event.
