Chaos and Fear in the Arakan: Global Webinar to Address Violence Against Rohingya

Cox’s Bazar, September 1, 2025

An online meeting titled “Chaos and Fear in the Arakan: Stopping Violence, Emphasizing the Rule of Law” will be held on September 11, 2025, ahead of the UN High-level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar on September 30, 2025.

The event will explore ways to stop the violence and prevent further deterioration of human rights in the Arakan. The Rohingya, an ethnic minority group residing in the region, continue to be caught between a rock and a hard place. Cycles of violence against the Rohingya have continued, with new perpetrators committing gross human rights violations. The webinar will discuss the latest developments in Arakan and what the future of justice and accountability might look like for the Rohingya and other minorities in the state.

Panelists

  • Kindra Lakusta, Legal Officer, UN Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar (IIMM), serving as CASS Coordinator for sharing evidence with international and national jurisdictions.
  • Habib Ullah, Executive Committee member of the Arakan Rohingya National Organization (ARNO) and part of the Arakan Rohingya National Alliance (ARNA) leadership.
  • Tanvir Munim, International Criminal Lawyer, Barrister of Lincoln’s Inn, and the first Bangladeshi listed counsel at the International Criminal Court.
  • Natalie Brinham, Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Bristol, whose research focuses on Rohingya oral histories and critiques of international approaches to statelessness and legal identities.

Moderator

  • Regina Paulose, Co-Chair, International Criminal Law Committee, ABA International Law Section.

Speaking ahead of the event, Regina Paulose said:

“It is great to see organizations like the American Bar Association remain engaged on issues relating to the Rohingya, especially now when the Rohingya community is at a critical juncture given the escalation in violence in the Arakan and significant decline in humanitarian aid.”
