Cox’s Bazar, January 9, 2025 – A fire broke out this evening in Camp-05, Block A01, at approximately 6:45 PM, creating panic among the residents. Thanks to the swift action of the local community, led by Majhi Khirul Amin, and the support of camp authorities, the fire was successfully brought under control.
“Alhamdulillah, the fire has been controlled,” said Majhi Khirul Amin, expressing gratitude that the situation did not escalate into a larger disaster.
Eyewitnesses described the flames spreading rapidly through the crowded camp before volunteers and residents worked tirelessly to contain the fire. Using buckets of water and other available resources, they managed to prevent further damage. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
Challenges and Vulnerabilities
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by Rohingya refugees living in overcrowded camps. Makeshift shelters constructed from flammable materials such as bamboo and tarpaulin are highly susceptible to fires. The lack of firefighting equipment and delayed emergency response times compound the risks, leaving residents at the mercy of such disasters.
Refugees in these camps also grapple with poor living conditions, inadequate essential services, and constant safety hazards. The fire underscores the urgent need for enhanced fire safety measures, including the introduction of firefighting equipment, better infrastructure, and community training to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Authorities and humanitarian organizations are urged to prioritize fire safety initiatives to mitigate such risks. Further updates on the situation will be provided as more details become available.
