The Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO) welcomes the filing of a universal jurisdiction complaint for genocide against the “President” of Myanmar, Min Aung Hlaing, by civil society groups and lawyers.  The universal jurisdiction complaint is another step towards justice and accountability for groups which are seeking to end impunity, which has riddled Burma for so long, to the point that international crimes and gross human rights violations continue to be carried out by the Tatmadaw and other actors who work with the Myanmar junta.

ARNO calls upon other States throughout Asia to reform their penal codes, as Indonesia has, and open up other pathways for justice and accountability, considering the violence that ethnic groups in Burma are facing. Further, ARNO calls upon Indonesia and other countries that are considering universal jurisdiction to open up prosecutorial efforts to include all other actors who are currently targeting the Rohingya and fueling violence in Arakan, which is preventing repatriation efforts from being realised, creating horrific humanitarian conditions for many in Arakan, and fueling genocide.
