China is hopeful that experimental repatriation of Rohingya will start from Ukhiya and Teknaf in Cox’s Bazar as soon as possible.
China’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Sun Weidong has hinted that it will happen before the monsoon at the foreign secretary level meeting in Dhaka.
For the past few years, China has been acting as a mediating country between Bangladesh and Myanmar on the Rohingya repatriation issue.
Sun Weidong held a meeting with Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen for about four hours at Padma State Guest House on Saturday.
It is estimated 1.2 million Rohingya are currently living in Bangladesh. Most fled a violent genocidal campaign in their country in 2017. Despite Bangladesh and Myanmar have signed a bilateral agreement for repatriation, 2 attempts of repatriation have failed.
The issue of Bangladesh’s inclusion in the Global Development Initiative (GDI), a new global initiative of Chinese President Xi Jinping, also came up for discussion.
