An elderly Rohingya farmer from northern Maungdaw lost one of his legs on Sunday afternoon after stepping on a landmine believed to have been planted by the Arakan Army, according to residents in the area. The explosion took place around four o’clock when the farmer was returning home with his cattle.
The victim has been identified as fifty two year old Abul Hashim from Naing Chaung village. He had taken his cows to graze near Kyet Yoe Pyin in the Haikkar Dalal area. Villagers said the route he used is one that farmers walk daily and is considered essential for grazing livestock.
Sudden Blast and Community Shock
Residents reported hearing a sudden explosion followed by cries for help. A neighbour said he knew the victim well and explained that the sound of the blast was frightening. He added that many people in the area already feel unsafe because landmines have been found along footpaths and farmland used by local families.
Villagers rushed to the site and arranged an urgent transport to Maungdaw Hospital. Doctors there are treating him for severe injuries caused by the blast.
Landmine Risks Growing in the Area
People in northern Maungdaw say landmines have become a constant threat. They worry that anyone using the same paths could be injured without warning. Farmers in Kyet Yoe Pyin, Naing Chaung and nearby villages said they now fear walking the routes they depend on for their livelihoods.
Residents added that landmine incidents have increased in recent months, creating fear among families who rely on grazing and farming to survive. Many say they feel they are living in an unsafe environment where even daily work can become life threatening.
