A fire broke out near the fire service office in Camp-4 Extension of the Rohingya refugee camp area on Saturday evening, damaging one shelter before being swiftly contained by emergency teams.
The blaze began around 6:00 PM, creating panic among nearby residents as smoke and flames rose close to densely packed shelters. However, thanks to the quick action of the camp’s fire service team, supported by Rohingya community volunteers, the fire was brought under control before it could spread to other structures.
“We were frightened at first, but the fire team responded very quickly. Only one shelter was affected, and no one was hurt,” said a local resident who witnessed the incident.
Camp officials confirmed that no casualties occurred during the fire. An immediate damage assessment is underway, and authorities are investigating the possible cause of the blaze.
Community leaders expressed gratitude for the prompt intervention, highlighting the importance of having a nearby emergency unit in such high-risk camp settings.
This incident once again underscores the vulnerability of shelters made from bamboo and tarpaulin, especially in summer months when dry conditions and cooking fires can easily trigger accidents.
