Teknaf, Bangladesh – 12 August 2025
Five Bangladeshi fishermen were reportedly captured by the Arakan Army (AA) while fishing in the Naf River near the Narkhondho area of Teknaf on Tuesday morning. Witnesses said the fishermen were taken suddenly when AA members arrived in a speedboat, leaving other fishermen and families in shock.
The captured fishermen are identified as MD Ali Ahmad, 41; Arke Ali, 20; MD Nur Hussain, 18; Sabah Hussain, 22; and MD Saiful Islam, 25. Three of the men are sons of Mohammad Ilyas, the owner of the fishing boat, according to the Chairman of the Sonadia Jaliapara Fishermen’s Association. They were reportedly taken while returning from fishing at sea.
Other fishermen in the area witnessed the incident and quickly left to inform the victims’ families. Family members have reported the case to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), who confirmed they are investigating the incident.
Gunfire has also been reported along the Bangladesh–Rakhine border, increasing tension in the area. Bangladeshi authorities are closely monitoring the situation to prevent further escalation.
