Fortify Rights has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to launch an investigation into alleged war crimes committed by the Arakan Army (AA), including atrocities targeting the Rohingya community. The appeal comes after the emergence of video evidence depicting AA soldiers torturing and killing military council prisoners, raising alarms over the group’s actions.
The organization emphasized the AA’s involvement in the persecution of the Rohingya, citing instances of violence, forced displacement, and killings. “The atrocities against the Rohingya people, including those perpetrated by the Arakan Army, demand accountability. The international community must act,” stated Fortify Rights.
Two videos verified by Fortify Rights allegedly show AA forces executing detainees, which the organization described as violations of the Geneva Conventions. “These acts are not isolated; they reflect a broader pattern of war crimes, including crimes against the Rohingya,” said Ejaz Min Khant, a human rights researcher at Fortify Rights.
The Rohingya community continues to bear the burden of such violence. “We have suffered unimaginable losses. Those responsible for these crimes, including the genocide against our people, must face justice,” said a Rohingya activist.
Fortify Rights has called on ICC member states to refer Myanmar’s situation to the court, stressing that justice is essential to ending impunity and ensuring lasting peace. “Justice is the first step toward healing and preventing future crimes,” the organization concluded.
