French Special Envoy for Myanmar, Christian Lechervy, has reaffirmed France’s strong commitment to supporting a sustainable and peaceful resolution to the ongoing Rohingya crisis. His remarks came during a meeting with Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary, Asad Alam Siam, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Wednesday.
Ambassador Lechervy emphasized the importance of engaging with all stakeholders to address the humanitarian needs of both the Rohingya refugees and the host communities along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. The two sides held detailed discussions on the urgent need for a long-term solution, particularly the early, safe, and voluntary repatriation of Rohingyas to their homeland in Myanmar.
Foreign Secretary Siam expressed deep appreciation for the French government and the European Union for their consistent advocacy in support of Rohingya rights and humanitarian assistance. He also thanked France for appointing a dedicated special envoy to focus on the Myanmar crisis.
Siam highlighted the ongoing challenges Bangladesh faces in hosting over one million Rohingya refugees, officially termed Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMNs), who fled mass atrocities in Rakhine State since 2017. He drew attention to the declining international contributions under the Joint Response Plan (JRP) and urged France to help mobilize greater support from EU member states and the broader international community.
In response, Ambassador Lechervy assured Bangladesh of France’s continued engagement. He emphasized the significance of the upcoming high-level Rohingya conference, scheduled to take place on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September, describing it as a crucial opportunity to generate renewed global momentum. He reiterated France’s commitment to justice, human rights, and lasting peace for the Rohingya people.
