March 12, 2025 – The Gambian Foreign Minister, Mamadou Tangara, met with Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, on Wednesday at the State Guest House Jamuna in Dhaka.
Their discussions primarily focused on The Gambia’s ongoing genocide case against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and strengthening diplomatic and economic cooperation between the two nations.
Commitment to Justice for the Rohingya
During the meeting, Tangara reaffirmed The Gambia’s firm commitment to seeking justice for the Rohingya genocide victims.
“The President of Gambia and the Gambian people are dedicated to this cause. We want to put this issue back on the global agenda,” he stated.
Professor Yunus expressed gratitude for The Gambia’s efforts, emphasizing the significance of the ICJ case in holding Myanmar accountable. “We want this case to succeed. Your support is invaluable to us,” he said.
Tangara also praised Professor Yunus’s leadership and diplomatic influence, stating that his role would positively impact global advocacy for the Rohingya.
“You are a household name in The Gambia. With your leadership, the international community will continue to support justice for the Rohingya,” he remarked.
Humanitarian Concerns and Bilateral Cooperation
The Chief Adviser highlighted Bangladesh’s continued efforts to assist the Rohingya community, including humanitarian support for displaced people in Myanmar’s Rakhine State.
He stressed the need for urgent food and medical assistance to prevent further displacement into Bangladesh.
Both leaders also discussed enhancing bilateral trade and cooperation between Bangladesh and The Gambia.
“Let us know how we can assist you,” Yunus stated, expressing Dhaka’s willingness to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties.
A significant outcome of the meeting was their satisfaction with a newly signed agreement on joint participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions.
Additionally, they explored the potential of microcredit programs to alleviate poverty in Africa and promote peace in conflict-affected regions.
The meeting was attended by Dr. Khalilur Rahman, High Representative of the Chief Adviser for Rohingya Affairs, and Lamiya Morshed, Senior Secretary and head of SDG affairs in the Bangladesh government.
The visit underscores the growing diplomatic engagement between Bangladesh and The Gambia, particularly in advocating for justice for the Rohingya and exploring new avenues for collaboration in development, peacekeeping, and humanitarian support.
